CHVRCHES - THE BONES OF WHAT YOU BELIEVE (10TH ANNIVERSARY)
Released: 20/10/23
Glaswegian trio Chvrches have always seemed to me like the Apollonian flip side to their Dionysian Swedish peers The Knife; both are possessed of inventive and ridiculously catchy synth-pop songs, but in contrast to the emo tone of the former, propelled by singer Lauren Mayberry's earnest and impassioned vocals, the protean force of nature that is Karin Dreijer often sounds like she’s acting as the master of ceremonies at a particularly orgiastic blood ritual. One approach of course is not better than then other, they simply serve different moods – and so, if you’re in need of fervent, heart-on-the-sleeve electro-indie catharsis (and who isn’t, every now and again?), the 10th-Anniversary Edition of the classic The Bones of What You Believe, released in October, featuring the outstanding ‘The Mother We Share’, is the perfect reminder that really, no one does fist-pumping electro-pop better than Chvrches.
