For her fourth album, Aspirin Sun, the excellent London-based avant-psych-folk singer-songwriter Emma Tricca once again teams up with what may just be the most formidable band currently operating, comprising as it does Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley, Dream Syndicate guitarist Jason Victor, and bass player Pete Galub. Of course, a top-shelf group is no guarantee of success, for if the headline artist doesn’t match the artistry of her/his team, then the experience can be akin to watching Sarah Lancashire perform a two-hander with Kym Marsh out of Hear’Say. Yes, they were both in Corrie, but given that one of them is among the finest actors of her generation, and the other is Kym Marsh out of Hear’Say, the result is understandably going to be more than a little disappointing.

Thankfully then, and to inexplicably extended what is frankly an already tenuous analogy, Tricca is no Kym Marsh, but rather the equivalent of another excellent Corrie alumna, Suranne Jones - her out of Vigil and Gentleman Jack. Anyway, Aspirin Sun is a profound and beautifully produced album that evinces a languid charm reminiscent of Jessica Pratt, Josephine Foster, and even, at points, the formidable Italian icon Mina – and is as deeply satisfying as Betty’s Hotpot on a cold February day.
