Forging a radical new take on the Gwo Ka musical tradition from the Caribbean Island of Guadeloupe, Abri Cyclonique, by the 69-year-old Guadeloupean singer Moïse Polobi, aided by his crack team of musicians, and the idiosyncratic producer Doctor L (Les Amazones d’Afrique, Tony Allen, Mbongwana Star), sounds paradoxically cutting-edge contemporary and millennia-old. While it may be his solo debut, Polobi has been singing for more than half a century, developing his powerful voice; and indeed, we may never have got to hear it were it not for a stroke of pure luck.

As the story goes, in September 2020, after the world’s lockdown, Polobi joined a musical session at the home of one his neighbours, percussionist Klod Kiavué. Unbeknownst to Polobi, in the audience, passing through Guadeloupe, was Valérie Malot, artistic director of French music agency 3D Family, who fell in love with his music and immediately arranged to take Polobi into the studio, where he conjured the remarkable Abri Cyclonique, developed from compositions he’d been recording for years, deep in his beloved forest, on a portable cassette recorder. Indeed, the LP’s cover, featuring a stately Polobi cross-legged on a rock amidst the Guadeloupean tropical rainforest, is a perfect indicator of the heady and fecund aural delights within.
