Coming on like a cross between the sublime stoner metal of Big Business, and the primordial psych of Goat, Slift’s third LP, Ilion, is one of the biggest, head-crushingly massive sounding albums I’ve heard in a goodly while  which is even more impressive when hip to the fact that the Toulouse outfit comprises only three people: brothers Jean and Remí Fossat, and Canek Flores. It’s also, gratifyingly, thinky-metal as fuck:, not least in its Homeric allusions (Ilion is the Greek name for the city of Troy), and song titles, which include the Dungeons and Dragons-sounding ‘Weaver’s Weft’, ‘The Words That Have Never Been Heard’ (very Led Zeppelin mysticism), and ‘Uruk’, which, as any fule kno, was the mythical capital city in the Epic of Gilgamesh (c. 2100–1200 BC). Nigel Tufnel and David St. Hubbins would certainly approve of the nomenclature, then – but they’d absolutely hate Slift’s sludgy-yet-vital post-metal goodness.
