After many years of a kind of stellar guest vocalist for hire, it was an absolute joy to hear that ex-Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser was back fronting her own band, with her partner, the percussionist Damon Reece (he of Spiritualized and Echo & the Bunnymen, among other greats) – and boy, what a record this extended version of the duo’s eponymous EP is (it comes with some brilliant remixes by the likes of Gwenno and John Grant). Dialling back a few notches the maximalist, wall of sound aesthetic of the Cocteaus, on tracks such as the jaw-droppingly good single ‘Golden Air’ we have the perfect miniature embracing all of Sun’s Signature’s influences – John Barry, electro-psych, 60s French Pop, and more – all coalescing around one of the most incredible voices of all time. Absolutely sublime.
