The Bay Area post-punk outfit Topographies’ sophomore LP picks up where their excellent 2020 debut Ideal Form left off, and delivers another raft of perfectly formed coldwave tracks. As you would expect, dispassionate vocals, and icy guitar and synth lines abound – but they’re underpinned by live and programmed drums, and elasticated bass lines, which make them danceable as all hell. Indeed, a supergroup made up of The Killing Joke and Bauhaus, performing in a Berlin goth disco, would be hard pushed to match the serious melodic frostiness on display on Interior Spring

There are many highlights on display here, including the super-hooky, anthemic opener ‘Night Sea’, which features a monumental riff not unlike that of College & Electric Youth’s classic neon-drenched elegy ‘A Real Hero’; and ‘Chain of Days’, which mixes atmospheric gloominess (you can almost taste the dry ice) with the textural depth and warmth of classic shoegaze to brilliant effect. While they may not be breaking new ground, Topographies understand perfectly the essentials required to make top-tier coldwave, and they do it extremely well.
