Following on from last year’s excellent The Pink Album, the beguiling Polychrome once again makes the case for Unloved being the most cine-literate band going, effortlessly evoking the alt-noir reality of, say, David Lynch, or Jim Jarmusch. Put another way, if they showed up in a nightclub scene in a film, you’d be certain that some really weird shit was about to go down.

When I listen to Unloved, I sometimes think that I may be unwittingly living in a Minority Report situation, and that the trio of Jade Vincent, Keefus Ciancia and David Holmes are creating music in some nefarious lab to target me specifically. To what end, I do not know; what I do know, however, is that the group sound like some of my favourite things – Wanda Jackson, Serge Gainsbourg, Broadcast, John Barry, Delia Derbyshire, The Shangri-Las, Françoise Hardy, Les Baxter – all wrapped up in one irresistible package, which just makes me feel really, you know, seen.
