This collection gathers the remarkable story and music of Antoine Dougbé, one of the most enigmatic figures to emerge from Benin’s fertile 1970s music scene. Though he released just three LPs and a handful of singles, Dougbé’s reputation among musicians in Cotonou bordered on myth.

Born in Abomey before moving to Cotonou, he absorbed the city’s vibrant mix of African and Latin styles while developing a deep fascination with traditional Beninese rhythms linked to Vodún ceremonies. A powerful initiate, Dougbé even referred to himself as “the Devil’s prime minister”, a title that reflected both his spiritual standing and the fearsome respect he commanded.

Dougbé rarely performed himself. Instead, he wrote songs that were arranged by Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, with vocals handled by Lohento Eskill and Amoussou William. The collaboration produced recordings that capture the band at the height of their powers.

Though largely overlooked at the time, Dougbé’s small catalogue remains a singular and mysterious chapter in West African music.
