Recorded in 1968 as a tribute to her husband, John Coltrane, who passed away the previous year, Alice Coltrane's A Monastic Trio is a monumental work of lamentation, at turns spiritually meditative, and blisteringly furious “ often in the same composition. In addition to Coltrane's phenomenal ability as a pianist, the LP boasts one of the greatest jazz ensembles of all time in saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Rashied Ali ” all members of John Coltrane's last quintet “ and both the outpouring of grief for John's passing, and the celebration of the great man's life are palpable in every note. It is as visceral an LP as you will ever hear, and one of the finest post-bop, avant-jazz LPs ever recorded: a rage against the dying of the light, an extraordinarily moving paean to a dearly departed husband and friend.
