Before Caribou, Dan Snaith was recording in a Toronto bedroom on a struggling computer. Released as Manitoba in 2001, Start Breaking My Heart was his debut and the point where years of experimenting finally began to make sense. Its colourful melodies, skittering percussion, playground samples and warm electronic pop introduced many of the ideas he would develop over the following decades. Around the same time, a chance meeting with Kieran Hebden of Four Tet helped Snaith secure the album’s release, setting his career properly in motion.
