Dr. K. Gyasi & His Noble Kings’ Sikyi Highlife returns via Strut, reissuing a defining 1974 recording from Ghana’s golden era. Rooted in the sikyi drum-dance of the Akan people, the album’s rhythms and vocal phrasing draw deeply from traditional forms, grounding the music in a distinct cultural lineage.
At the same time, Gyasi and his band expand highlife’s scope. Among the first guitar bands to integrate keyboards and a full horn section, The Noble Kings push the sound outward while keeping its core intact. The result sits at the intersection of heritage and experimentation, reflecting a wider movement among post-independence artists to reassert local identity within modern arrangements.
Featuring standout players including Eric Agyeman, Thomas Frimpong, Ernest Honny and Ralph Karikari, Sikyi Highlife became one of the era’s major sellers and remains a touchstone for the genre.
