Space Afrika's Quiet Storm sees the Manchester/Berlin duo of Joshua Tarelle Reid and Joshua Inyang expand their vision across a sweeping, collaborative work that draws on ambient, dub, techno and modern classical influences. Rooted in themes of identity, spirituality and personal growth, the album traces a coming-of-age journey through immersive soundscapes and carefully placed vocal performances.
The project was shaped in part by acclaimed artist Glenn Ligon, whose work on Black identity and queerness inspired the record and provided both its title and cover artwork. Across a fluid sequence of songs and interludes, Quiet Storm moves between moments of introspection, resilience and catharsis, exploring questions of purpose, autonomy and survival.
Highlights include the dramatic opener 'Vanity', featuring Grammy-winning soprano Axelle Fanyo, and the expansive '2MLN', a collaborative piece with Tony Njoku, Gabriel Evans, PIKE and GB. Self-produced and self-funded, Quiet Storm is Space Afrika's most ambitious statement yet, pushing their sound into broader and more emotionally resonant territory.
