The Mark Kozelek it’s ok to like, Bill Callahan’s ‘Dream River’ is the set of lovely lullabies you were hoping it would be from its title. The core style is … folk? I never think of these sort of things as folk really, more just capital ‘S’ Songs. Anyway, this is a beautiful record hewn from acoustic guitars and conversational lyricism, and when all of that is flecked with some spare band instrumentation ‘Dream River’ becomes the quietest storm you were ever caught in.
