My Days of 58 is the eighth album by Bill Callahan, and his first since 2022. Across twelve songs, he deepens his singular take on songwriting, blending dry wit, everyday poetry and musical invention into something unmistakably his own.
For this record, Callahan drew on the energy and openness of his live band — guitarist Matt Kinsey, saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi and drummer Jim White — whose chemistry had been proven on stage and on 2024’s Resuscitate!. “Improv, unpredictability, the unknown — that’s what keeps me motivated,” Callahan notes. “The best parts of a recording are often the mistakes.”
Working closely with each player, Callahan recorded most tracks as duos with White, while Kinsey and Laurenzi shaped the album’s guitars and horns in complementary ways. The result, he says, has a “living room” feel — relaxed, grounded and human, “like someone on the couch playing, not a blast from heaven or hell.”
Additional contributions from Richard Bowden (fiddle), Pat Thrasher (piano), Chris Vreeland (bass), Mike St. Clair (trombone) and Bill McCullough (pedal steel and cover photography) enrich Callahan’s characteristic sense of space and storytelling. The result is a warm, deeply lived-in album — one that feels both deliberate and spontaneous, precise and humanly flawed.
