Coin Collection 3 brings Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection trilogy to a close, refining the ideas that have shaped his solo work into its most expansive form. Rooted in a search for connection to home and heritage, the record balances Cullum’s own voice with a wider community of collaborators, reflecting a shared musical lineage as much as individual vision.
Built from reel-to-reel field recordings, iPhone voice notes and rough studio takes gathered across different locations, the album was assembled with a deliberately handmade approach. Folk, jazz and pop elements blur into a kaleidoscopic whole, shaped by intuition rather than polish. Contributions from Erin Rae, Rich Ruth, Oisin Leech, Hollow Hand and others deepen the sense of collective authorship.
Lyrically and thematically, Cullum turns to the folklore of his native England as a way of processing contemporary unease. Ancient rituals, standing stones and occult-tinged tales offer an alternative to the certainties of the present, grounding the songs in a reverence for nature and its power. Tracks such as ‘Gavon’s Eve’ and ‘Old Paul Hill’ let these narratives take precedence, imagining worlds where the natural order eclipses human excess. The result feels like a self-made folk horror film, intimate and unsettling, closing the trilogy with focus and conviction.
