When it first came out in 2017, any establishment with any pretensions to hipness' was rinsing Four Tet's New Energy “ it was as zeitgeist-y as an IDM gets. Of course, pop-cultural omnipresence doesn't necessarily mean a record is actually any good “ and often its everywhere-ness is inversely proportional to its being any good (cf. Moby's Play). New Energy, however, was simply a stone-cold banger, and such was its greatness that beyond the usual respected gatekeepers of taste such as Pitchfork (who put in their list of the top 20 electronic albums of 2017), even Q magazine “ not usually known for their appreciation of IDM (But Jeff, where are the bloody guitaaaarrrssss maaaate?!') “ gave it five stars, calling it a career-defining masterpiece.
All of which is to say that if you did miss this fantastic album the first time around (perhaps you were on a Polar expedition, or serving on a sailing vessel of some kind), then this reissue is a perfect opportunity to discover one of the last decade's best electronic albums.
