Daniel Blumberg - Sotto le Nuvole (Pompeii: Below The Clouds) (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Tax included.
Daniel Blumberg provides the stark, experimental soundtrack to Gianfranco Rosi’s film Sotto le Nuvole, a portrait of Naples set between Mount Vesuvius and the restless Phlegraean Fields. The music mirrors the film’s shifting sense of time and place, unfolding as a delicate, suspended soundscape.
Blumberg works with saxophonists John Butcher and Seymour Wright, whose extended techniques draw out breath, reed vibration and microtonal detail to form a fragile web of sound. Recorded initially in Blumberg’s London flat, their near-silent tones are joined by Blumberg’s bass harmonica and recordings of the launeddas, a traditional Sardinian reed instrument.
Further sessions took place underwater in the ruins of Baia, near Pompeii, where geophones and hydrophones captured the surrounding environment. The result is a hushed, elemental work where saxophone breaths merge with volcanic air, water and distant echoes of history.
