Originally released by Peacefrog in 1998, Mahogany Brown was Moodymann’s debut album for the label and remains a defining work in Kenny Dixon Jr.’s catalogue. Drawing on soul, funk, gospel, hip-hop and house, it moves from the hazy disco pulse of ‘Mahogany Brown’ and ‘Stoneodenjoe’ to the tougher electronics of ‘Me and My People’s Eyes’. A vivid expression of Black American musical traditions, the album helped establish Dixon as one of Detroit house music’s most distinctive and influential figures.
