Ship Sket is the project of 26-year-old Josh Griffiths, originally from Dorset and now embedded in Manchester’s close-knit scene. His debut album InitiatriX arrives on Planet Mu, drawing from UK club traditions while delving into themes of spirituality, fetish, and hidden darkness.
Rather than pursuing precision, Griffiths thrives on accidents, resampling, and pushing tracks to the edge of collapse. The result is not so much deconstruction as derailment: a smeared collision of distorted pop, underwater drill, dubby musique concrète, and dadaist impulses. Dramatic strings and bare piano passages sit alongside lo-fi beats, bursts of distortion, and found sounds, often all at once.
Tracks like ‘Vendetta's Theme’ (featuring Charlie Osborne) pile filthy drill rhythms and demonic vocals over warped distortion, while ‘Mimikyu’ pairs ornate strings with playful bleeps to create a hypnotic club tool. ‘Permanent Kigurumi’ drifts between haunted melodies and explosive percussion, ghosted by a whispered refrain: “Just Like You.”
For Griffiths, production is a form of channeling energy, a divine act of shaping chaos into music. On InitiatriX, that process results in work that is strange, sensual, and arrestingly unpredictable.
