Folk soul emerged alongside the Black music of the late ’60s and early ’70s, but followed a path distinct from spiritual soul. Where the latter often reflected Black liberation and the wider struggles of the era, folk soul questioned and rejected the status quo. Minimal arrangements, classical influences and adventurous songwriting became vehicles for confronting entrenched power and social inequality.
