Given that the brilliant Hawksworth(Drag City)byMatt Espy comes hot on the heels of Dave Lombardo's awesome Rites of Percussion, I think we might just be in the midst of a drumming-record renaissance. While Ohio native Espy is perhaps best known for being the sticks man in such excellent groups as the Atombombpocketknife, Duke Special and The Mountain Goats,his first solo release is not concerned with the tight indie-rock songcraft of his day-job bands, and instead operates at the outer limits. Essentially a psychedelic dialogue between birds, electronics, and percussion that owes as much to the circular and iterative avant-garde minimalism of Terry Riley as it does to the exotica of Martin Denny, Hawksworthmarks the arrival of an exciting new talent in the realm of experimental musics.
