Curated by DJ Notoya, ‘Tokyo Glow’ explores Japanese city pop, funk and modern soul from the late ’70s and ’80s. Drawn from the Nippon Columbia archives, it moves from the laid-back ‘Kimagure’ by actress Kumi Nakamura through the sunshine sounds of Miyuki Maki and Hiroshi Sato to funkier cuts from Kengo Kurozumi and Hitomi ‘Penny’ Tohyama. Also featuring Hatsumi Shibata, New Generation Company, Jadoes and more, it’s a fine snapshot of Japan’s fertile pop underground.
