A Hawk and a Hacksaw return with Volume 8, their first album for Rocket Recordings. Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost draw again on folk traditions from Romania, the Balkans and Turkey, bringing violin, accordion and percussion into contact with drone and distortion. ‘Gayda’ recasts a Turkish bagpipe melody for distorted violin and tapan drum, turning folk forms towards raw, celebratory noise. Written amid the conflicts of recent years, the record centres on solidarity and collective feeling. Opener ‘Beloved’ sets out that intent, while ‘Yes, We Love You’ responds to the Bendaly Family’s 1978 Lebanese pop song ‘Do You Love Me’ with a call for universal love.
