aja monet is a Surrealist Blues poet, recording artist and bandleader working across poetry, music and political expression. Emerging from New York’s Lower East Side, she became the youngest winner of the Nuyorican Grand Slam before developing a genre-crossing practice rooted in jazz, blues and experimental sound.
Her debut poetry album when the poems do what they do earned a Grammy nomination, combining spoken word with live instrumentation in an ensemble-led setting that centres resistance, love and joy. As a bandleader, she has performed internationally at venues including the Barbican Centre, Lincoln Center and the Guggenheim.
Beyond music, monet is an acclaimed author. Her collection my mother was a freedom fighter received a NAACP Image Award nomination, while florida water reflects her work in South Florida, exploring place and collective memory.
