Inspired by E. T. A. Hoffmann's The Sandman, Alva Noto's LICHTSTIMME is an imaginary film soundtrack exploring the uneasy relationship between perception and reality. Beginning with spacious, delicate electronics and a sense of openness, the music gradually becomes more uncertain. Familiar patterns turn strange, sounds lose their definition and an underlying tension begins to emerge. Released through NOTON, it's the first half of a conceptual diptych examining identity, illusion and the unsettling possibility that nothing is quite as it seems.
