The “Oh-By The Way” LP by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers is released on Music On Vinyl and documents a late chapter in the band’s history, recorded in 1982 in the Netherlands. The record brings together seven compositions, featuring both original material by band members and a rendition of the standard “My Funny Valentine.”
Musically, the album stands in the hard bop tradition: powerful drum work, distinctive horn arrangements, and solos that leave room for personal statements. Several tunes come from younger members of the group and hint at the creative renewal within the Messengers; pieces such as “Oh-By The Way” and “Duck Soup” are by the young Blanchard and Harrison, respectively, while “Alicia” and “Sudan Blue” were written by fellow band members. The compositions combine driving ensemble passages with open solo sections and remain clear and focused in their overall statement.
The lineup on the recording features Art Blakey on drums, Terence Blanchard (trumpet), Donald Harrison (alto saxophone), Bill Pierce (tenor saxophone), Johnny O’Neal (piano), and Charles Fambrough (bass); the session was produced by John Ramsey, with Wim Wigt as executive producer. The record shows how Blakey used his band as a vehicle for developing talent while at the same time preserving the characteristic, punchy jazz sound of his Messengers.
