Numerous times while watching Alex Garland’s Civil War at the pictures (released in April this year), there were moments presented on screen that were so shocking, so visceral, that I half expected my head to explode, Scanners-style. The film is masterwork – visually stunning, a lot terrifying – and a large contributor to its success is the fantastic soundtrack by Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow (Portishead / Beak>).
There are a number of adrenalising needle-drops in the movie, among them Suicide’s ‘Rocket USA’, and a cognitive dissonance-inducing ‘Say No Go’ (De la Soul), but the most deeply affecting passages are those accompanied by Salisbury and Barrow’s beautiful, tension-ratcheting ambient-drone score, which perfectly encapsulates the creeping dread, as well as fleeting moments of joie de vivre, that the road-tripping, photo-journalist protagonists experience as they head deeper and deeper into the dark, moribund heart of a near-future America.
