Almost Waking brings together Guatemalan cellist and composer Mabe Fratti and American guitarist Bill Orcutt for a collaboration that drifts between experimental song and improvisation.
Fratti, based in Mexico City, is known for blending cello, voice and electronics into melodic, exploratory pieces. Orcutt, whose work stretches from Harry Pussy to his solo recordings, approaches guitar through unconventional tunings, abrupt rhythms and splintered melody.
The project began when Orcutt sent a series of solo guitar pieces to Fratti. She developed vocal and cello parts around them, exploring their harmonic possibilities while leaving space for the guitar’s jagged gestures. Some sessions also included contributions from I. La Católica, helping refine the arrangements.
Recorded between Mexico City and San Francisco, Almost Waking unfolds as an open dialogue between two distinct musical voices.
