Billy Bragg’s second album, Brewing Up with Billy Bragg, followed the stripped-back DIY punk of Life’s A Riot With Spy vs Spy. Originally released in 1984, it opens with the tabloid-bashing ‘It Says Here’ and moves through the trumpet-touched ‘The Saturday Boy’ to the soulful Hammond organ of ‘A Lover Sings’. Produced by Edward De Bono, the album placed in the NME’s Top 10 albums of 1984 and remains an early showcase for Bragg’s mix of politics, romance and raw guitar songwriting.
