Billy Bragg broadened his stripped-back sound on 1986’s Talking with the Taxman About Poetry, bringing a full band into the fold alongside guests Kirsty MacColl and Johnny Marr. Produced by John Porter and Kenny Jones, it became Bragg’s first UK top ten album and includes the sharp romantic storytelling of ‘Greetings To The New Brunette’, the moving ‘Levi Stubbs’ Tears’ and workers’ anthem ‘There Is Power in a Union’. A key step in Bragg’s move from solo agit-pop towards a bigger, more expansive sound.
