Produced by Joe Boyd and Wiggy, Workers Playtime found Billy Bragg broadening his sound with a band featuring Danny Thompson on double bass, BJ Cole on pedal steel, Bruce Thomas on bass and Micky Waller on drums. Written in the wake of Margaret Thatcher’s 1987 election victory, it includes the stirring ‘Waiting For The Great Leap Forwards’ and stark a cappella piece ‘Tender Comrade’. Across the album, Bragg tackles love, disappointment, politics and prejudice without losing the optimism at the heart of his songwriting.
