BOB VYLAN - HUMBLE AS THE SUN

Featuring the most judicious use of a kids' choir since Faith No More’s ‘Be Aggressive’, track four of Bob Vylan’s infectious Humble as the Sun, the sarky as fuck ‘Dream Big’, is a perfect example of the English duo's heady and extremely effective sonic recipe: a blend of UK Subs-like punk, Weezer-esque college rock, grime, rap, and old school jungle reminiscent of the Ragga Twins, all imbued with wit, rage and urgency. 

Another reason to love Bob Vylan: when the duo of singer/guitarist Bobby Vylan and drummer Bobbie Vylan (yes you read that right, and no I don’t think these are their real names either) somehow won a MOBO award for Best Alternative Music Act in 2022 (I say ‘somehow’, because the MOBOs are usually painfully bland), the homonymic Bobbies took to the stage and said: “We released an album this year that we produced entirely, mixed entirely, recorded entirely, all from my bedroom…so everybody that’s here, bigging up Atlantic and bigging up Warner, fuck that, us man did it ourselves.” Which is the funniest thing that’s happened at a UK music industry show since Jarvis flapped his bum at Michael Jackson during the 1996 Brit Awards.
