Calexico’s The Black Light is a sun-bleached set of songs that play like the soundtrack to a desert road trip. Joey Burns and John Convertino weave mariachi trumpets, pedal steel, Latin jazz percussion and carnival organ into a shimmering mix of borderland styles. Moving at a languid, siesta-like pace, the album conjures a heat-hazed atmosphere that feels both expansive and intimate. Known for their collaborations with Giant Sand, OP8, Victoria Williams and Richard Buckner, the duo bring all that experience together here in a richly cinematic record that remains one of their defining works.
