After just one listen the Scottish-Danish composer Clarissa Connelly’s debut for Warp Records, World of Work, lodged itself firmly under my skin; repeat listens merely confirmed that this stunning record will be on my mind (and in my ears) indefinitely. Sonically sitting somewhere between the transcendental avant-electro of Julia Holter, the shimmering magico-mythical collages of Jenny Hval, and the gnostic baroque pop of Kate Bush, World of Work is comprised of experimental folk compositions that, while feeding into Connelly’s preoccupation with the arcana of Celtic and Nordic culture, feel utterly contemporary and life-affirming. Perhaps better put, it’s like looking at an impressive Precambrian outcrop through an Apple Vision Pro.
