Formed in the early 90s, David Christian’s Comet Gain are purveyors of some of the finest jangle-noise pop (with tracks veering from very jangly to extremely punk indeed) this side of the Atlantic, and influenced and inspired generations of groups without ever gaining the popularity that they so richly deserve – although they did make waves during the pandemic lockdown in 2020, when Christian, who, like most of the world, found that he suddenly had time on his hands, decided to keep himself busy by digging through the considerable Comet Gain archives. What he scared up from the back of his figurative (and quite possibly literal) wardrobe astonished the devoted Comet Gain community, when the songs were shared week-to-week by Christian as part of the beloved phenomenon that was Bandcamp Friday.
And it wasn’t just die-hard CG heads who lost their shit – younger indie fans were finally discovering one of our most endearing (and enduring) British guitar bands, and revelling in the treasure trove of outtakes, demos, live recordings and simply forgotten and never released tracks. The Misfit Jukebox, then, is a compilation of these compilations (as it were), that sees the said tracks released for the first time on vinyl – and proof that, sometimes, very good things come to those who wait.
