DE SCHUURMAN - BUBBLING INSIDE
Released: 24/11/23
As the legend goes, the Dutch phenomenon bubbling (or bubbling house) was created by accident after the Curaçao-born DJ Moortje, playing at The Hague’s Club Voltage in the late 80s, accidentally dropped a dancehall track at 45RPM rather than 33, and let it play out. The crowd reportedly went nuts for the full-on hi-NRG sound, and the genre ultimately became a crucial part of Holland's Afro-diasporic club landscape for the next couple of decades, before a new coterie of young DJs and producers began to evolve it into wild new strains.
The Hague-based teenage prodigy Guillermo Schuurman (AKA De Schuurman) was undoubtedly one of the most talented of this generation, and breathed new life into the genre by fusing bubbling rhythms with rap and R&B samples, trance synths and electro-house wobbles. His tracks quickly became a regular fixture on the Dutch circuit, the best of which are featured on the terrific Bubbling Inside, a collection of Schuurman's most essential cuts from the era (2007-2009), with a couple of newer productions added for context. Crafted solely with the aim of destroying dancefloors everywhere, most of these tracks were never properly released and have been painstakingly hunted down and collected by Nyege Nyege Tapes, together with Sascha Roth from Pantropical in Rotterdam and De Schuurman himself. Absolutely bangin’.
