DJ Amir returns to Detroit’s revered Strata Records catalogue with Strata Records – The Sound of Detroit Volume 2, a focused companion to his earlier survey. Where the first volume highlighted the label’s soulful side, this edition leans into its heavier grooves and funk-driven energy while maintaining Strata’s bold, exploratory spirit.
Amir’s long-standing relationship with the Strata archive has already unearthed treasures including the Charles Mingus ‘Jazz in Detroit’ box set and key reissues from The Lyman Woodard Organisation, alongside reinterpretations and remixes by the likes of Jazzanova, Kai Alce and Wajeed. Here, he turns curator once more, drawing together essential cuts from The Soulmates, Fito Foster, Keith Boone & Janice Coombs and The Contemporary Jazz Quintet, among others.
The result underlines Strata’s vital role in shaping innovative Black music and cementing Detroit’s reputation as a powerhouse of artistic independence.
