Don Cherry, Collin Walcott and Leon Thomas’ only documented performance together was recorded at Michigan’s Pease Auditorium in March 1977. Sunrise captures Cherry’s Organic Music approach, moving through trumpet, doussn’gouni, bamboo flute, percussion and vocals, with Thomas’s distinctive singing and Walcott’s multi-instrumental playing. Oregon members Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless and Glen Moore also join part of the set. A hypnotic meeting of spiritual jazz, African and Eastern traditions, it offers a fascinating glimpse of ideas that would soon feed into CODONA.
