Twenty years after leaving Cape Town, Esa Williams releases his debut LP Dala What We Must, created with collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Robin G. Breeze.
Blending field recordings with layered instrumentation, the album unfolds through spacious, globally influenced compositions. It is Williams’ most collaborative project so far, with contributions from musicians in London, Oaxaca, Nairobi and Cape Town.
Work on documentary soundtracks, including Cursed and The Invisible Hand, informs the record’s attentive approach to atmosphere and pacing.
Completed shortly before Williams became a father, Dala What We Must carries a sense of focus and quiet change, its title echoing a South African call to action: do what must be done.
