Werner ‘Zappi’ Diermaier distils the free-thinking spirit of Faust into Gugaruz, an intuitive collaboration with Dirk Dresselhaus (Schneider TM), Elke Drapatz, Uwe Bastiansen and Ilpo Väisänen. Built from improvisation, field recordings and spontaneous interaction, the album transforms everyday sounds into adventurous, exploratory music.
Inspired by an offhand remark in a Vietnamese restaurant, Gugaruz combines driving percussion, bass, electronics and guitar with found sounds gathered from kitchens, waterways and the surrounding landscape. From the hypnotic pulse of Big Field and the distorted rhythms of Saurer RCurated by Gunther Wüsthoff and produced with Onnen Bock and Bureau B's Gunther Buskies, Fliegen Lernen sees the Faust co-founder drawing on archive recordings, new studio sessions and collaborations to create a characteristically inventive album. Built from electronics, live instrumentation, spoken word and found sounds, it moves between wiry punk-funk, kosmische grooves, electroacoustic experiments and atmospheric soundscapes. Inspired by ideas stretching back to Wüsthoff's Faust years, the record never dwells on nostalgia, instead embracing chance, improvisation and playful discovery to prove that almost any sound can become music.
egen to the spacious Yesterday's Gift and Schleuse, the music captures ideas in their rawest form. A vivid celebration of experimentation and collective creativity, Gugaruz embodies the unpredictable spirit that has defined Faust for decades.
