Fela Kuti’s Expensive Shit takes its title from an extraordinary 1974 encounter with the Nigerian authorities. After police raided his Kalakuta compound and attempted to frame him for cannabis possession, Fela swallowed the evidence. Held for three days while officers waited for proof to emerge, he secretly swapped his waste bucket with those of fellow prisoners. The eventual sample came back clean and he was released. Fela transformed the episode into Expensive Shit, answering state harassment with biting humour, political defiance and formidable Afrobeat.
