Hull duo Fila Brazillia, aka Steve Cobby and David McSherry, spent the 1990s gleefully bending the rules of electronic music. Their third album Black Market Gardening is among their finest, moving through bass-heavy trip-hop, cosmic synths, brisk breakbeats, funky guitar and flashes of drum ’n’ bass. Samples and live instrumentation blur together throughout, giving the record a playful, unpredictable character. Rooted in the UK’s mid-’90s chill-out scene but far too restless to sit neatly within it, this should appeal to fans of Kruder & Dorfmeister and Nightmares On Wax.
