The George Clinton-led seminal funk-rock group released Maggot Brain, arguably their grand magnum opus, in 1971. Nothing from the Parliament-Funkadelic canon came even close to the record's instrumental might and soul-crushing heaviness. This heavy ooze bookended the album via the title track and the equally bombastic and cathartic 'Wars of Armageddon', two mammoth tracks which framed the intervening funk jams perfectly. Hailed as one of the greatest guitar parts put to tape, 'Maggot Brain' saw Eddie Hazel's musicality discover a new echelon of devastatingly soulful, totemic melody. It comes as no surprise that this majestic performance came from Clinton's instruction to "as if your mother just died”.
