Launched in early 1969, Apple Records’ Zapple imprint was conceived as a space for unrestricted creative experimentation, reflecting the Beatles’ growing fascination with avant-garde music and radical artistic expression. Its mission, announced simply as a home for “more freaky sounds”, proved short-lived but strikingly focused.
George Harrison’s Electronic Sound stands as one of only two releases to emerge from Zapple before the label was shut down later that year. Constructed around Harrison’s Moog IIIp synthesiser, the album presents two extended, exploratory pieces that foreground process, texture and sonic possibility over conventional structure.
The artwork, painted by Harrison himself, depicts the Moog system used to generate the album’s sounds — the same instrument later incorporated into several tracks recorded by the Beatles during the Abbey Road sessions. Stripped of pop framing and commercial intent, Electronic Sound remains a rare document of curiosity-led experimentation, capturing a moment when one of rock’s most visible figures stepped fully into uncharted electronic territory.
