After stints with Theoretical Girls and The Static, Glenn Branca made his first solo statement with 1980’s Lesson No. 1. Its title track locks driving rhythms and interwoven guitars into euphoric minimalism, somewhere between Neu! and Philip Glass. ‘Dissonance’ heads somewhere darker, with guitar, keyboards, bass, drums and even sledgehammer creating a harsh, industrial racket. A key document of New York’s downtown art-punk scene, its influence can be heard in the work of Sonic Youth, Swans and countless others.
