Now available on LP after being released digitally last year on Invada Records, Hannah Peel’s score for the Sky adaptation of the 1957 science fiction novel by John Wyndham (in which the women in an English village become mysteriously pregnant) is an intricate and haunting soundscape that cleverly incorporates the sound design of the limited series. Peel, a Northern Irish, Emmy-nominated composer (and Radio 3 presenter), knows how to do dark and creepy, and alongside analogue synthesisers that recreate the horror of the ‘Hive Mind’, she weaves an incredible tapestry of tape manipulations, electronics, drones, woodwind, and melodies echoing the song of the cuckoo bird. In Peel’s own words, she wanted to create "a score that balanced darkness and light, fear and beauty” – and boy did she.
