Ice (Lafayette Afro-Rock Band) - Disco Frankenstein
Ice (Lafayette Afro-Rock Band)
From the crypts of Parisian funk comes Disco Frankenstein, a lost Halloween gem from Ice (Lafayette Afro Rock Band). Originally issued in Japan in 1976 under a tangle of pseudonyms – Sweet Exorcist, Captain Dax, Hot Blood, Krispie & Co. and more – the project was masterminded by producer Pierre Jaubert and bandleader Frank Abel, drawing on the talents behind the much-sampled Soul Makossa and Malik albums.
Rather than a straightforward compilation, the record captured the group’s playful mid-to-late ’70s experiments. Wah-wah guitars, Afrobeat rhythms and eerie synths collide on tracks such as ‘Dr. Beezar (Soul Frankenstein)’, ‘Disco Vampire’, ‘Zeke the Zombie’ and ‘Igor’s Reggae’. What could have been novelty instead becomes serious dancefloor heat, delivered by musicians at the height of their powers.
Unearthed and remastered by The Carvery, Disco Frankenstein is revived by Strut, bringing a long-hidden trove of horror-disco oddities back to life.
