For any fans of QotSA who were wondering why it was taking so long to get a follow-up to 2017's Villains,the recent news that frontman Josh Homme was diagnosed with cancer last year was the poignant answer (thankfully, Homme's operation was, by all accounts, a success). Hints about this life-changing experience abound on In Times New Roman, not least in track seven, What the Peephole Say,' in which Homme pronounces that The world's gonna end in a month or two ¦ . But despite the LP's significant quota of darkly comic and acerbic lyrics, and the brilliantly raw and brutal riffage, the overriding feeling on the album is one of carpe diem.(There are also ridiculously catchy hooks everywhere “ this is a QotSA LP, after all.) Some of the finest hard-rock from any band since, well, QotSA's last album, In Times New Romanis an incredible achievement.
