J Mascis followed the split of Dinosaur Jr. by opening a new chapter with BAKED GOODS RECORDS release More Light, the first album under the banner J Mascis + The Fog. Recorded at Bob’s Place across nine months in 2000, the sessions brought together an impressive cast of engineers — Tim O’Heir, Phil Ek, Kevin Shields, Thom Monahan, Dan McLoughlin, and Mark Alan Miller, who also handles the new 25th-anniversary remaster — with John Agnello on the mix.
Best known for leading Dinosaur Jr. and for his pivotal shift from hardcore minimalism to high-volume, expressive guitar work, J Mascis used More Light to expand even further. The Fog’s revolving lineup has featured figures such as Mike Watt, Ron Asheton, Robert Pollard, Kevin Shields, Dave Schools, and Kyle Spence, underscoring Mascis’s instinct for collaboration and his continued influence on modern guitar music.
More Light stands as a key moment in Mascis’s evolution: a heavy, exploratory record that showed how far his songwriting and sonic world could reach beyond the foundations of his earlier bands.
