Jim Jarmusch and Anika first connected at Sacred Bones’ fifteenth anniversary event in 2022, where mutual admiration quickly evolved into creative partnership. Their collaboration culminated in the soundtrack for Jarmusch’s film Father Mother Sister Brother — a suite of spectral, improvisatory pieces shaped by instinct and atmosphere rather than narrative focus.

It began with a cover of Jackson Browne’s ‘These Days’, inspired by Nico’s version, recorded in Berlin with the Kaleidoskop String Quartet. Jarmusch later reworked the track into a more minimal take, layering in electric guitar textures. When Dusty Springfield’s ‘Spooky’ was confirmed as the film’s only pre-existing song, Anika proposed a stripped-back reinterpretation of it, featuring just voice, upright bass, finger snaps, and a distorted organ riff — chosen to open the film’s credits.

The rest of the score emerged through long improvisational sessions between Anika and Jarmusch, with Wurlitzer, guitar, and tape effects forming the basis of their sound world. Later refined in New York and completed during a residency at the Pompidou Center in Paris, the resulting music drifts through shadow and space — a collaborative soundscape that envelops, rather than defines, the film’s characters.
